Answer
The most important thing to consider with rinsing a conductivity sensor is that the water used to rinse the conductivity sensor can be a source of contamination, regardless of what type of water that is used. When testing dirtier samples, it is important that the probe be rinsed between samples to remove any contaminants or dirt from the surface of the sensor to prevent it from interfering with the next sample. The quality of the water used for this initial rinse step is not relevant so long as it's clean and relatively low conductivity (the conductivity of this rinse water should be lower than the samples being measured). So, rinse water used may be reverse osmosis, deionized (DI)/demineralized, distilled, or even in some cases tap water. But after this rinsing step, or if the samples are clean and don't require this first step, it is important that the sensor be rinsed with the sample to be measured before the measurement is taken.

Examples when going from sample 1 to sample 2:
  • If sample 1 is not clean: After reading on sample 1, rinse with DI or tap water to remove residual contaminants from sample 1, then rinse with sample 2 to rinse off any residual DI or tap water. After that there would be some residual sample 2 that will not interfere when the sensor is then put in sample 2 to take the next reading.
  • If sample 1 is clean. After reading on sample 1, rinse with sample 2 to remove any residual sample 1. After that there would be some residual sample 2 that will not interfere when the sensor is then put in sample 2 to take the next reading.
