Dissolved oxygen (DO) plays a critical role in steam cycle corrosion mechanisms.  Common treatment schemes focus on creating either an oxidizing or reducing environment in the cycle water.  An oxidizing environment promotes the growth of hematite, an iron oxide which forms a strong protective surface on wetted surfaces.  A reducing environment promotes the growth of magnetite, a somewhat weaker protective surface.  The concentration of DO is a measure of the effectiveness of a given anti-corrosion treatment.
