Question
How to configure the DR3900/DR6000 to use WiFi/WLAN connection for use with my MSM devices?
Summary
Instructions for configuring DR3900/DR6000 to establish WiFi/WLAN connection
Answer
The DR3900 must have the most recent firmware (DR3900 see Instrument Information --> Instrument Version - must be 1.18 or greater with Kernel 8, DR6000 see Instrument Information --> Instrument Version - must be 1.11 or greater with Kernel 8) to ensure that the following configuration instructions produce the intended results.  If a kernel update is required, the instrument must be serviced by a qualified Hach service technician (field or bench).

WLAN Configuration

After connecting an approved USB-WLAN-adapter e.g. Netgear WG111v3/TrendNet TEW-424UB or LM Technologies LM005 to the DR3900/DR6000 an additional entry appears in the PC & Printer menu showing the connection state of the WLAN.

Please switch on the WLAN connection by activating the radio button ‘On’. Then press the button ‘WLAN”:

In the WLAN Setup menu the WLAN network can be chosen and the according key configured. Please proceed by pressing the ‘WLAN Network’ button:

The available WLAN networks are displayed with their signal strength (only WLAN networks with SSID broadcast enabled are displayed and can be accessed):

After choosing a WLAN network the key for the WLAN authentication should be configured. Supported are:
  • no authentication for open networks (set WLAN Key to ‘Off’),
  • authentication via a shared WEP key with 64 bits entered as 5 ASCII characters or 13 hexadecimal characters  (preceded by ‘0x’ in the edit window),
  • authentication via a shared WEP key with 128 bits entered as 10 ASCII characters or 26 hexadecimal characters  (preceded by ‘0x’ in the edit window),
  • authentication via a WPA/WPA2-PSK passphrase (8-63 ASCII characters).
Please select the according radio button and press the WLAN Key button below.

As previously mentioned for WEP keys either an ASCII format may be entered or a hexadecimal format. For the hexadecimal format the string has to be preceded by ‘0x’. (For WEP keys this forbids ASCII format keys beginning with ‘0x’.) WPA/WPA2-PSK passphrases may only be entered as ASCII string.

Network Server Configuration

Now the network server may be configured.

The network server may either be a windows network drive or an FTP server. Please choose one of them by activating the according radio button and press the ‘Setup’ button.
Only a single network server configuration exists for wired LAN and WLAN together. Changes done to the network configuration are active for both connections. The DRXXXX will use either connection depending over which the network server can be reached.

When configuring the network server, be aware that for hostname resolution the DNS server has to be configured to the WLAN router. Otherwise a fix IP address has to be used to identify the network server.

Activation of the WLAN Configuration

When the WLAN and the network server configuration is complete, please press the ‘OK’ button to activate the configuration:

The activation of the WLAN connection will take some time (approx. 25 seconds).

When the WLAN connection succeeds the menu entry in the PC & Printer window will display the state of the WLAN connection. If the connection attempt fails an error window appears with the option to display details of the connection failure.
