How long should the sample be centrifuged for Volatile acids method 8196?
The centrifuge time required will depend upon the revolutions per minute, the length of the centrifuge arm, the g-forces applied and the consistancy of the sample. A standard time is difficult to estimate, however, the purpose of the centrifuge step is to separate the solids in sludge from the liquid portion. Based upon this, the samples need to centrifuge long enough to provide a sample (supernatant solution) which is free from solids. That should be no longer than 5 minutes. The time can be reduced or increased from there.
