Answer
Since the release of the Hach Model 54400-00 CL17 Chlorine, we have come across many instances were improper installation has created many different types of problems.  Since it is extremely important to maintain the proper pressure and flow at the inlet of the analyser, it is necessary to install the head pressure regulation kit included with the instrument.  When installed properly, the maximum inlet pressure at the base of the instrument is less than 5 PSI and the maximum flow rate will not exceed 500 ml/minute during the flush stage.  If it is not feasible to install the head pressure regulation kit, then it is recommended that a pressure regulator be installed at the inlet of the instrument.  The water pressure must be reduced to 5 PSI and a second regulator could be used to control the flow.  If these conditions are not met, sample could over flow the colorimeter assembly damaging the colorimeter and electronics.  Excessive pressure will also cause the sample to leak past the pinch block assembly and cause erroneous readings and possibly no reading at all.  Damage to the tubing may also result from excessive pressure and again cause damage to the electronics of the instrument.  If you have questions regarding the installation of your Hach CL17 Chlorine Analyser please refer to the Installation Section of your CL17 Instrument Manual or you can contact a representative at Hach Company who would be glad to assist you with your concerns.
