Question
When should total chlorine be measured?
Summary
Total Chlorine applications
Answer
Total chlorine is typically measured in systems using a combination of ammonia and chlorine to disinfect, to determine the total chlorine concentration.  Total chlorine is the sum of free chlorine as well as mono-, di- and tri-chloramine.  Chloramines are formed when chlorine is mixed with ammonia, a process called chloramination. If the chlorine levels will be reported to a regulatory agency, it would be recommended to confirm with local regulations which form of chlorine (free or total) to measure and which methodology to utilize.
