Question
Will a dechlorinating powder pillow remove chlorine from my sample before running the BOD dilution method?
Summary
Removing chlorine from samples before BOD analysis
Answer
Dechlorinating powder pillows should not be used. It is recommended to follow the steps in the Interference section of the dilution method 8043 or 10230 for dechlorinating the sample. Any excess dechlorinating agent (sodium thiosulfate) will exert an oxygen demand and cause the BOD results to be higher than actual. It is important to find exactly how much sodium thiosulfate is required to remove the chlorine by titration, as described in the test procedure.
