Question
Can Hach nitrogen ammonia methods measure Total Ammonia?
Summary
Measuring total ammonia
Answer
Bound nitrogen ammonia are also referred to as amines. In amines, the hydrogen atoms in the ammonia (NH3) have been replaced by a hydrogen group or linked to a benzene ring. There are different classes of amines that include; primary, secondary, tertiary, and aromatic amines. The nitrogen ammonia methods do not measure bound or amines directly.

The nitrogen ammonia salicylate or Nessler methods measure the sum of both ammonium NH4+ and ammonia NH3 together because the reagent sets change the pH of the sample during the reaction. The methods are not able to break the bonds of the amine into NH3 for direct measurement.
