Question
What could be causing an inconsistent volume of distillate in tubes after distillation?
Summary
Inconsistent volume of distillate in tubes after distillation
Answer
When using the Micro Dist for analysis, it is extremely important that the tubes are removed from the block quickly after distillation, and the sample tubes must be removed from the collector tube within 4 seconds of removal from the block. As the temperature of the tube and sample cool, this creates a pressure differential between the two tubes that causes a phenomenon known as 'suck back.' When this happens, the distillate is sucked back into the sample tubes by the change in pressure. This results in inconsistent volume and can effect results.
